I tell your father I want you

Ron Hicks — Yearning, 2018

Before we proceed, I’d like to acknowledge that I love God. With my spirit, with my soul and body. He governs my life and I hope to please my lord with my words, actions, deeds and how I love you. Every night when my knees kiss the ground and I make my room a sanctuary, I ask him to make me worthy of you. I ask for grace to be the man deserving of your love. He loves you, and I know he guards you jealously. Who can battle with the lord? So I ask him to mould me. He is the potter and I’m the clay; I ask him to prepare me for you.

I do not want to win your heart with mere words. I know fine jewels are nice; they look pretty with the glitter you have in your eyes, and I intend to get you all the finer things of life. But I do not want to sweep you off your feet with things made by man. I want to prove that I’m good for you. Without knowing, you were the crutch I leaned on until I learnt to walk again. I was lost in darkness, and your voice pulled me towards the light. With you, every worry, heartache, pain, everything fades away.

Holy Father, you see my heart. You see its depth and know the English letters, in every possible combination cannot describe this feeling. I look at her and I’m smitten. When you said everything you created was good, she is living breathing proof. I know I talk about her eyes a lot, but they show how resplendence your works are. I could talk about how alluring she is, but you know; you made her. I’m asking that you make me what you want for her.

Back to you, precious jewel. If I were with you my lips would be sealed, but since life has placed us continents apart, I will write to you. If I don’t my heart might beat out of my chest and run to you. I want to know when you feel like wearing black or when pink becomes your favourite colour again. I want to get you groceries on my way from work, and sneak in the cookies you sincerely crave, but will not ask for because you bragged you’d stop eating them.

Tell me your dreams. Sit in silence with me; pour out your heart, and I’ll drink. Offer me your silence, and I’ll make it home. I’ll carve our story in the fabric of time. We will create memories teeming with love, laughter, and tears from eating too many sweets. I’ll make heart shapes with whipped cream and berries on your pancakes, and our daughter will have your eyes. I cannot fathom how ethereal your beauty is. From the crown of your head to the sole of your feet, you are perfect beyond words.

Dear God, please.
